The main road around Iceland will bring the most worth seeing places within reach and enable you to experience the country in 15 days. The island is a natural wonder and filled with places of historical or cultural interest and the landscape is simply amazing.
Day 1: ARRIVAL IN ICELAND
Arrival in Iceland. If time allows, go for a exploration walk around Reykjavík.
Overnight in Reykjavík in one of our 3-star-hotels.
Day 2: WHALE FJORD AND BORGARFJÖRÐUR
Explore the scenic Whale fjord and the valley of Borgarfjörður with its waterfalls, hot springs and historic sites. Visit Europe´s most powerful hot spring Deildartunguhver.
Spend two nights in one of our hotels in West Iceland.
Day 3: ICELAND IN A NUTSHELL ON SNÆFELLSNES PENINSULA
Explore the Snæfellsnes peninsula with its snowcapped volcano Snæfellsnes, stunning coastline, lava fields and bird colonies. Take your time to explore the magnificent Snæfellsnes National Park. Visit the cozy town of Stykkishólmur from where boat tours around Breiðafjörður bay are available.
Day 4: GLAUMBÆR TURF FARM
Drive to Skagafjörður, the valley of horses and home of Glaumbær turf farm. Stop at the former volcano Grábrók, where you can hike up to the top and enjoy a magnificent view over the area. Overnight 3 nights in North Iceland in one of our hotels.
Day 5: AKUREYRI AND GOÐAFOSS
Explore Akureyri, the capital of the north. Take your time for a stroll in the city. Afterwards continue driving to the waterfall of the gods, Goðafoss.a.
Day 6: MÝVATN AREA
Go for a hike in the Mývatn area and prepare to be impressed by the unique landscape. Pay a visit to the large goethermal area Námaskrað. An optional evening whale watching tour is available from Húsavík (June - August).
Day 7: DETTIFOSS WATERFALL
Drive around Tjörnes peninsula to visit the Ásbyrgi canyon and Europe’s most powerful waterfall, Dettifoss (mid June to August). Heading east, you should pass through a large wasteland area. Overnight 2 nights in Fosshotel Eastfjords or similar.
Day 8: HALLORMSSTAÐUR AND HENGIFOSS
Spend a whole day to discover East Iceland. Travel along the coastline of the lake Lagarfjlót. Stop in Hallormsstaðir, where Iceland’s largest forest is located. See the magnificent waterfall Hengifoss.
Day 9: EAST FJORDS OF ICELAND
Proceed further south. Enjoy your ride along the scenic East fjords. Stop in Höfn and enjoy the cozy atmosphere in this old fishing town. Overnight 2 nights in our hotels in Vatnajökull area.
Day 10: VATNAJÖKULL NATIONAL PARK
Enjoy the Vatnajökull glacier, with the glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón and the Skaftafell National Park. Take a trip on the cape Ingólfshöfði and watch the puffins. Stop at the farm Brunhóll for a delicious glacier ice cream.
Day 11: WONDERS ALONG THE SOUTH COAST
Drive along the south coast and witness many natural wonders such as black lava beaches, waterfalls and glaciers. The folk museum in Skogar, which is close to the impressive Skogarfoss waterfall, is worth a visit. Overnight 2 nights in Fosshotel Hekla or similar.
Day 12: GATEWAY TO THE HIGHLAND
Explore the magnificent Þjórsadalur area, or use the day exploring the pearl in the Highlands Landmannalaugar; only 4x4.
Day 13: GEYSIR HOT SPRINGS AND GULLFOSS WATERFALL
Take the so called Golden Circle tour and visit Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir hot spring area in Haukdalur and Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site. Head back to Reykavík where you will spend the next two nights in one of our 3-star-hotels.
Day 14: REYKJAVÍK AND THE BLUE LAGOON
Continue your exploration of south Iceland on the Reykjanes Peninsula and stop at the famous Blue Lagoon. The geothermal areas Gunnuhver and Krýsuvík on the peninsula are well worth the visit as well as the picturesque Kleifarvatn lake. You don´t want to miss the chance to cross between the two continents of Europe and North America on the bridge between continents.
Day 15: DEPART FOR HOME
If not already experienced: Explore the Reykjanes Peninsula with a stop at the famous Blue Lagoon to relaxation.
