The main road around Iceland will bring the most worth seeing places within reach and enable you to experience the country in 19 days. The island is a natural wonder and filled with places of historical or cultural interest and the landscape is simply amazing.
Day 1: ARRIVAL IN ICELAND
Arrival in Iceland. If time allows, go for a exploration walk around Reykjavík.
Overnight in Reykjavík in one of our 3-star-hotels.
Day 2: WHALE FJORD AND BORGARFJÖRÐUR
Explore the scenic Whale fjord and the valley of Borgarfjörður with its waterfalls, hot springs and historic sites. Visit Europe´s most powerful hot spring Deildartunguhver.
Spend two nights in one of our hotels in West Iceland.
Day 3: ICELAND IN A NUTSHELL ON SNÆFELLSNES PENINSULA
Explore the Snæfellsnes peninsula with its snowcapped volcano Snæfellsnes, stunning coastline, lava fields and bird colonies. Take your time to explore the magnificent Snæfellsnes National Park. Visit the cozy town of Stykkishólmur from where boat tours around Breiðafjörður bay are available.
Day 4: GLAUMBÆR TURF FARM
Drive to Skagafjörður, the valley of horses and home of Glaumbær turf farm. Stop at the former volcano Grábrók, where you can hike up to the top and enjoy a magnificent view over the area. Overnight 5 nights in North Iceland in one of our hotels.
Day 5: TRÖLLASKAGI PENINSULA
Visit the small villages Siglufjörður and Hofsós on Tröllaskagi peninsula and get ready to be impressed by the surrounding mountains and deep valleys.
Day 6: THE ARCTIC CIRCLE ON GRIMSEY
Take a trip to the northernmost part of Iceland, the small island of Grímsey, which lies on the arctic circle.
Day 7: DAYBREAK AT HÚSAVÍK OR ASKJA VOLCANO
Visit the small town of Husavík with its different museums and enjoy a whale watching tour originating from the harbour. Another option would be to join a guided daytour to the Askja volcano which will be an unforgettable adventure driving through the rough highland to this unique place.
Day 8: HIKING IN THE MÝVATN REGION
The unique landscape surrounding the Mývatn area makes it a perfect spot for hiking. What better way to relax after the hike than to enjoy the Mývatn natural baths. Also worth a visit are the pseudocrates at Skútustaðir and the enormous hot spring area of Námaskarð.
Day 9: DETTIFOSS WATERFALL
Drive around Tjörnes peninsula to visit the Ásbyrgi canyon and Europe’s most powerful waterfall, Dettifoss (mid June to August). Heading east, you should pass through a large wasteland area. Overnight 2 nights in Fosshotel Eastfjords or similar.
Day 10: HALLORMSSTAÐUR AND HENGIFOSS
Spend a whole day to discover East Iceland. Travel along the coastline of the lake Lagarfjlót. Stop in Hallormsstaðir, where Iceland’s largest forest is located. See the magnificent waterfall Hengifoss.
Day 11: EAST FJORDS OF ICELAND
Proceed further south. Enjoy your ride along the scenic East fjords. Stop in Höfn and enjoy the cozy atmosphere in this old fishing town. Overnight 4 nights in our hotels in Vatnajökull area.
Day 12: HÖFN
Spend the day in the cozy town of Höfn. You can take an ATV Tour on the beach or relax in the Cities swimming pool.
Day 13: VATNAJÖKULL NATIONAL PARK
Enjoy the Vatnajökull glacier, with the glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón and the Skaftafell National Park. Take a trip on the cape Ingólfshöfði and watch the puffins. Stop at the farm Brunhóll for a delicious glacier ice cream.
Day 14: VATNAJÖKULL GLACIER
Use the whole day to enjoy the Vatnajökull area with the national park Skaftafell. Here you find nice well marked paths for a hike. Book an optional guided glacier hike trip. Or go ice climbing with one of the guides from Skaftafell National Park.
Day 15: WONDERS ALONG THE SOUTH COAST
Drive along the south coast and witness many natural wonders such as black lava beaches, waterfalls and glaciers. The folk museum in Skogar, which is close to the impressive Skogarfoss waterfall, is worth a visit. Overnight 2 nights in Fosshotel Hekla or similar.
Day 16:GATEWAY TO THE HIGHLAND
Explore the magnificent Þjórsadalur area, or use the day exploring the pearl in the Highlands Landmannalaugar; only 4x4.
Day 17: GEYSIR HOT SPRINGS AND GULLFOSS WATERFALL
Take the so called Golden Circle tour and visit Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir hot spring area in Haukdalur and Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site. Head back to Reykavík where you will spend the next two nights in one of our 3-star-hotels.
Day 18: REYKJAVÍK AND THE BLUE LAGOON
Continue your exploration of south Iceland on the Reykjanes Peninsula and stop at the famous Blue Lagoon. The geothermal areas Gunnuhver and Krýsuvík on the peninsula are well worth the visit as well as the picturesque Kleifarvatn lake. You don´t want to miss the chance to cross between the two continents of Europe and North America on the bridge between continents.
Day 19: DEPART FOR HOME
If not already experienced: Explore the Reykjanes Peninsula with a stop at the famous Blue Lagoon to relaxtion.
