Íslandshótel Joins the UN Tourism's Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism
The United Nations World Tourism Organization has officially approved Íslandshotel’s signatory of the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism.
Íslandshótel is the first Icelandic tourism company and the first hotel chain in Iceland to join the Glasgow Declaration, alongside the Icelandic Tourism Cluster (Íslenski Ferðaklasinn). As a signatory, Íslandshotel commits to deliver plans aligned with the pathways to halve its carbon emissions by 2030 and reach Net Zero by 2050.
Íslandshotel commits to:
• Support the global commitment to halve emissions by 2030 and reach Net Zero as soon as possible before 2050;
• Deliver climate action plans within 12 months from becoming a signatory (or updating existing plans), and begin implementing them;
• Align plans with the five pathways of the Declaration (Measure, Decarbonise, Regenerate, Collaborate, Finance) to accelerate and co-ordinate climate action in tourism;
• Report publicly on an annual basis on progress against interim and long-term targets, as well as on actions being taken;
• Work in a collaborative spirit, sharing good practices and solutions, and disseminating information to encourage additional organizations to become signatories and supporting one another to reach targets as quickly as possible.
“By joining the Glasgow Declaration, we can further implement effective work processes in the field of sustainability and environmental protection. Tourists today are very aware of environmental issues, and with this step, we demonstrate that Íslandshótel is not only a leader in this field but will continue to take big steps in this journey. Environmental issues are close to our heart, and we welcome this milestone for the company.” Davíð Torfi Ólafsson, CEO of Íslandshótel, was quoted as saying in the announcement.
