If you’re looking for a touch of nature close to Reykjavík, you can’t do any better than Elliðaárdalur Valley. We’ll tell you everything you need to know about visiting, from how to get there to what to do once you arrive.

What is Elliðaárdalur Valley?

Elliðaárdalur (pronounced el-li-tha-our-dal-ur) is a peaceful nature reserve located in a suburban area of eastern Reykjavík. The name translates to “valley of the Elliða Rivers,” which refers to the twin rivers, Elliðaár, that cut through the valley.

This area was once comprised of lava fields, but was gradually transformed into one of the city’s prettiest retreats, with many trees planted during the 20th century and paths developed for visitors to explore. Now, it’s one of the most beloved parts of Reykjavík - by locals and tourists alike!

How to get to Elliðaárdalur Valley

The quickest, easiest and most flexible way to get to Elliðaárdalur is by driving.

Located just 5km from the city centre, the drive should only take you 10-15 minutes, depending on traffic and the time of day. Follow Route 48 heading east, and watch for signs directing you towards Árbær or Heiðmörk, both of which border the valley.

There are a number of free parking areas along the edge of the valley, conveniently located near the main cycle and walking paths.

If you’re not able to drive, you can use the public bus system, Strætó, to get to the valley. Buses run regularly from city stops like Hlemmur. Watch for routes that go through Árbær or Breiðholt, but bear in mind that the bus will not drop you exactly at Elliðaárdalur. Instead, the nearest stop will require about a 20-minute walk to get to the valley.

Walking & Hiking Trails

Outdoor enthusiasts are naturally drawn to Elliðaárdalur, thanks to the wonderful paths and hiking trails through the valley. The entire valley is cut through with well-maintained paths, many of which run along the river or lead you through peaceful woodland. The majority of the trails are flat and easily accessible, perfect for all ages and ability levels.

There are short strolls that take you past waterfalls and benches, perfect for a picnic or just taking in the tranquillity of the valley. If you prefer a longer loop (up to 5km), you can opt to explore further afield, taking you deeper into the forest, where you will find other paths that lead you toward Heiðmörk Nature Reserve.

Enjoy the Elliðaá River

If, like many, you find being by water therapeutic, the Elliðaá River will not leave you disappointed. The crystal clear waters flow through the valley, in some parts the river is calm and peaceful, while in others it roars powerfully, but all bends of the river are beautiful.

You can spend plenty of time walking across a variety of beautiful bridges, looking out for small rapids and waterfalls, and even admiring local anglers trying for the catch of the day. Bear in mind that permits are required for fishing if you’re planning to give it a go yourself!

Woodland and Wildlife

Unlike much of Iceland’s treeless landscapes, Elliðaárdalur Valley is heavily forested, offering the chance to enjoy pine, spruce and birch trees. The wooded areas are ideal for picnics, and you can spot plenty of birdlife, as well as squirrels and rabbits darting through the undergrowth. In the autumn, the valley becomes a beautiful blanket of burnt orange and golden leaves, making it an ideal destination for a seasonal walk.

Cycling

Hopping on a bike and pedalling along the paths is one of the best ways to experience Elliðaárdalur Valley. The paths are wide and paved, running along the river and looping through the woods. You can bring your own bike or rent one in Reykjavík. The paths are not steep, making them suitable for everyone from young children to elderly people.

Whether you’re heading out for a morning stroll, an afternoon cycle, or a relaxed picnic under the trees, Elliðaárdalur is a reminder that some of Iceland’s most beautiful spots are hiding in plain sight.
