Where is Heiðmörk Nature Reserve and How Do You Get There?

Heiðmörk is located roughly 15-20 minutes southwest of Reykjavík by car. To get there, you will need to depart the city on Route 49 before joining Route 1 for a short distance. Then you will exit onto Route 408, which will take you to the entrance of the nature reserve. The full journey is just 19.5km (12 mi), and there are plenty of parking areas within the park.

More than 4 million trees have been planted there since it was founded in 1950. Today, parts of Heiðmörk are lush woodlands.

Elliðavatn is the largest lake in the area and offers fantastic fishing opportunities (permit required). It’s also a great starting point for larger hikes through the reserve, allowing you to take in all the natural beauty on offer.

Birdwatching

Heiðmörk is a bona fide birdwatcher’s paradise. More than 60 species of birds have been recorded in the area, including whooper swans, Arctic terns, and a wide variety of waders and ducks. Spring and summer are the best times to visit if birdlife is at the top of your agenda, as this is when migratory species return, bringing the lakes and forests to life.
