What is Grasagarður Botanical Garden?

Grasagarður Botanical Garden (also known as Reykjavík Botanical Garden) is a peaceful, plant-filled retreat nestled within the city’s Laugardalur Valley. It first opened in 1961, created to showcase Iceland’s diverse and beautiful flora, whilst also introducing international plant species that thrive in the country’s climate. The gardens were opened in line with Reykjavík’s 175th anniversary, as a designated conservation area for Iceland’s plant life. And as an added bonus, this is a free attraction!

Themed Plant Collections

Peruse more than 4,000 species of plants, ingeniously grouped into categories like plants with medicinal properties, rock gardens, and even Arctic-alpine flora. This variety of themed beds showcases Iceland’s plant life, alongside examples of hardy plants from across the world that have adapted to Iceland’s climate.

The Arboretum

Grasagarður Botanical Garden boasts a small but growing arboretum, which showcases a wonderful array of trees, including rowan, spruce, pine, and birch. Trees are somewhat scarce in Iceland, so seeing this many is a wonderful change. In the summer, local birdlife can be glimpsed in abundance in the branches of the arboretum.

Ponds and Wildlife

At the heart of the gardens, there is a small pond which acts as a reflective space for human visitors and a haven for wildlife. Glimpse ducks, geese, frogs, and other local creatures drawn to the beautiful spot.

Art Installations

The garden is dotted with fascinating examples of art and sculpture, created by Icelandic artists. These add a touch of creativity and whimsy to the otherwise natural surroundings, and often fall within themes of harmony, growth, and nature, to complement the gardens.

Seasonal Delights

Just like natural landscapes, the appearance of Grasagarður Botanical Garden changes throughout the year with the seasons. In the spring, delight in daffodils and crocuses blooming from the ground. During the summer, wildflowers and perennials are at their peak. In the autumn, you can enjoy fiery hues from trees and shrubs, and in winter, the entire scene makes for a quiet, frosty atmosphere, which is perfect for a peaceful wintry walk.
