Fosshotel Westfjords

Fosshotel Westfjords is nestled deep in the northwest of Iceland in a quaint village, with ideal links to the incredible wildlife (as one of the best places to see puffins in Iceland) and landscapes of the Westfjords. Nearby to the hotel, you’ll find Látrabjarg Nesting Cliff, the magnificent Dynjandi Waterfall and Rauðisandur red sand beach, to name just a few incredible sights.

The rough and jagged coastline of the Icelandic Westfjords actually accounts for about a third of the total coastline of the entire country. This amounts to stunning coastal views, ocean structures, and dramatic beaches. Here, you can leave behind the black sand beaches of Iceland’s south and enjoy white and red sandy beach settings on your Westfjords journey. Steep hills and flat-topped mountains make for enthralling hiking landscapes for more active visitors, while the sparse population can mean you’ll not see a soul for hours of driving the winding Westfjords roads.

Fosshotel Westfjords is a three-star hotel in the small fishing village of Patreksfjörður, which acts as a gateway to some of Iceland’s greatest attractions. Bird-watching (including puffins, northern gannets, guillemots and razorbills), hiking, or photography are just some of the excellent pastimes that the Westfjords set a stunning backdrop for. Whether you choose to join group tours or simply roam the area by yourself, there is no shortage of breathtaking landscapes in the Icelandic Westfjords.

After a day of rugged hiking, a long road trip, or being blown away by the incredible waterfalls the Westfjords has to offer, you’ll appreciate a comfortable retreat at the end of the day. Fosshotel Westfjords has everything you need to relax after a long adventure, in the perfect cosy location, in the town of Patrekfjörður, to return to each evening after setting out to discover something new.

Interesting places and scenery in Westfjords, Iceland

Raudisandur

Rauðisandur near Patreksfjörður

Rauðisandur is the beach called around the lagoon Bæjarvaðall. Here you can take a walk on the beach covered by red sand. The red colour comes from the mussels which are washed up at this beach. It can be considered as an endless beach.
Latrabjarg

The Látrabjarg cliff

The Látrabjarg cliff on the southernmost tip of the Westfjords is one of the busiest bird cliffs in the whole world. It is as well the westernmost point of Iceland (and Europe). The cliff is a line of several cliffs and with 14 km long and up to 441 m high it is the largest bird cliff in Europe. Safe from the foxes, the birds are fearless and provide stunning opportunities to take pictures from a close range. The puffins are particularly tame and are on the one frequenting the grassy, higher part of the cliffs.
Dynjandi (1)

Dynjandi waterfall

Dynjandi (also known as Fjallfoss) is a set of waterfalls. The waterfall has a height of 100 metres. Underneath the big waterfall (Fjallfoss) are five smaller waterfalls: Hundafoss, Strokkur, Göngumannafoss (beyond which a passage exists), Hrísvaðsfoss and Sjóarfoss. It is just a couple of kilometres drive from the waterfall to the museum of the national hero Jón Sigurðsson in Hrafnseyri.
