Whale watching and the GeoSea

The quaint fishing village of Húsavík, with a population of 2,200 and situated along the coast of Skjálfandi Bay, offers premier whale-watching opportunities in Iceland. This bay, teeming with plankton, draws approximately 24 whale species, including well-known ones like the orca (killer whale), humpback whale, minke whale, and blue whale. By choosing responsible wildlife experiences that respect the animals and their natural habitat, guests can enjoy unforgettable encounters with these magnificent creatures in Iceland, often called the land of the midnight sun. Additionally, a visit to Húsavík GeoSea offers a unique experience. As you soak in the warm, steamy waters, you're treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and ocean.

Lake Botnsvatn & Búðará Nature Trail

Lake Botnsvatn is a peaceful natural area above Húsavík, ideal for walking, birdwatching and enjoying the surrounding landscape. Guests can follow the nature trail from town via the Búðará stream and continue around the lake for about 5 kilometres, experiencing the local scenery at a slow and low-impact pace. To help protect the area, please stay on marked paths, keep a respectful distance from birds and wildlife, avoid disturbing plants, stones or natural habitats, and take all litter back with you. If you would like to learn more about the trail, its history, and the surrounding nature, click here to read our blog.

Húsavíkurfjall Mountain

Húsavíkurfjall rises directly behind Húsavík and offers beautiful views over the town, Skjálfandi Bay and the surrounding landscape. It is a rewarding local hiking area for guests who wish to experience nature close to the hotel. From the summit of Húsavíkurfjall, you will enjoy breathtaking views over the town, the bay, and the Kinnarfjöll mountains beyond the bay. On a clear day, you can also see the islands of Flatey and Lundey. Please choose a route suitable for your ability and the weather conditions, stay on established paths where possible, avoid damaging fragile vegetation, and respect the quietness of the area so that other visitors and local wildlife can enjoy it too.
